“Woo-hoo!” Obi cried out in joy. She pumped her fist in the air in triumph. This caused Obi to almost lose her balance and tumble back into the volcano, but, luckily, the gerbil regained her balance just in time.

Thanks to an outdoor floodlight just outside of Mrs. Creesy’s classroom window, the classroom wasn’t as dark as it might’ve been. The desks made shadowy shapes in the dim light. Obi slid down the steep slope of the volcano on her bum-bum. Reaching the bottom, Obi sprang to her feet and raced across the window ledge. As she leaped down to the floor, Obi glanced over at Mrs. Creesy’s desk. The blue homework folder was no longer there.

Obi hurried out of the classroom and into the next classroom. It was darker in this classroom—darker and creepier. Obi slowed up as she approached the little table where the guinea pig’s cage sat.

“Hawo?” she said tentatively, gazing up to the top of the table. The cage looked like a shadowy smudge in the darkness. “Mr. Guinea Pig? Are you there? It’s me . . . Obi. You remember me, don’t you? We met today. Remember? I’m the gerbil you scolded because I wasn’t where I was supposed to be. You said I’d blow it for everyone. By the way, what did you mean by that?”

Obi paused and listened. She didn’t hear a sound. This was not a good sign. She ventured closer to the little table. Obi stopped, rose on her hind legs, and peered up. She had to really strain her eyes to see in the darkness. Her mouth fell open.

The door to the front of the cage was flung open! The guinea pig’s cage was empty!

Obi thought she would cry. Even the guinea pig had gone home!

“Oh, my gosh!” wailed Obi. “I’m the only living creature in this whole school tonight!”

Scared and feeling terribly lonely, Obi went back out into the hallway. Being in school all by herself at this hour of night had to be the creepiest place on earth!

Obi began to sob as she wandered aimlessly down the dimly lit school hallway. She was passing the door to the gymnasium when, to her astonishment, she thought she heard noises on the other side of the door. Obi stopped to listen. It sounded like . . . well, like a gym class! But how could that be? It was night, and school was closed for the day! Obi stepped over and put her ear close to the door. Sure enough, she heard voices inside the gymnasium! In a rush of excitement, Obi squeezed under the door.
